Constructing business simulations with service patterns for WSC 2008

ibm design language

Having multiple gray families gives each design the opportunity for nuance and meaningful moments of color. Each experience should be dominated by the grays and the core colors of black, white, and the blue family, allowing the other color families to have vibrancy and provide purpose. These signs are the initial physical manifestations of our brand seen by clients and employees on arrival, setting a strong first impression. As with all other aspects of our signage program, align exterior signage precisely using the 2x Grid.

Defining your design principles

It ensures that designers create cohesive and consistent user experiences across platforms, products, user interfaces, and features. Deploying an enterprise workload with a few clicks can be challenging due to various factors such as the complexity of the architecture and the specific tools and technologies used for deployment. Creating a secure, compliant and tailored application infrastructure is often more challenging and requires expertise. However, with careful planning and appropriate resources, it is feasible to automate most aspects of the deployment process. IBM Cloud provides you with well-architected patterns that are secure by default for regulated industries like financial services. Sometimes these patterns can be consumed as-is or you can add on more resources to these as per the requirements.

Additional guidance

This characteristic, while subtle in its application, is essential to the effectiveness of any experience. We must put care and craft into every experience if we expect any confidence or consideration in return. Today, as with technology, the talent, techniques, thinking and tools of design have become more and more abundant and accessible to all. The last best experience that anyone has anywhere becomes the minimum expectation for the experience they want everywhere.

Who’s Responsible for Creating a Design Language?

Apparently there are an abundant amount of immersive projects going on within IBM! Seeing the multitude of projects encouraged us as this confirmed our presumed need for a set of principles and guidelines to unify design, share reusable assets, and assist future AR/VR designers and developers. This is the beginning of THINK Reality Guild, a self-organized group of designers, developers and data scientists working on VR and AR projects across Watson, Cloud, Digital, Analytics, Research, Design, GBS and GTS. Creating a shared vocabulary and guidelines gave existing products quick lifts and instantly improved the consistency of user experiences across IBM’s many product lines—including legacy systems. As part of our research for THE LOOP documentary, we spoke with many IBMers about how design practices spread throughout the company to create the remarkable product and business outcomes IBM and its clients are seeing.

Principles, guidelines, and ready-made assets to help you build exceptional experiences.

This consistency is grounded by a set of well-defined rules on how to work with our component library in the context of dark and light themes. The color palette has been organized into four distinct 4-Color families, each containing the IBM core blue. When creating color groups for your particular usage and application, you may combine any of the colors within these families. When fewer colors are required, you may further subdivide any of the 4-Color families into 1, 2 or 3 Color families.

In this installment, we concentrate on how one predefined unit, when used in multiples of two, defines the creation and use of a 2x Grid that functions seamlessly across an ever-changing sea of ratios and formats. Shades of grey ensure data points are visible while not distracting from the key insights. On the other hand, connecting specific colors to certain key metrics helps your audience easily recognize frequent indicators. The legend should explain the chart’s meaning by defining the association of each visual property, such as color, shape and size, to the corresponding data. The short lived appearance of our AR/VR chapter has already brought us unexpected rewards.

Design Systems & DesignOps in the Enterprise

Inspired by their history, we explored the rich detail that went into Plex’s development, its impressive breadth and adaptability, and its global nature with support for over 100 languages. By illuminating a chart through sequential or diverging palettes, you add depth and dimension to specific data, drawing attention to the quantitative aspect of the story. Now that the IBM Design Language is a few years old, Saylor and Hughes say the next priority is continuing to evolve—and to prioritize outcomes as much as process. Last fall, Hughes and her team took a deep dive into the best ways to continue scaling the language throughout the company, and qualitative and quantitative ways to measure adoption. When selecting materials for your next signage project, consider materials sustainably sourced. The weekly design playback is great for getting feedbackon work in progress from a group of designers and design leaders dedicated toyour success.

If you aim to build a design system, defining your visual language first will help guide the development of your UI components and pattern library. The IBM brand systems have been developed for various IBM businesses, audiences, categories, and offerings. Read them to understand the rationale behind everyvisual and verbal detail to ensure your work is built on these importantfoundations. These kits come with Carbon components so you don’t have to build them.

ibm design language

This single source of truth eliminates design drift and enhances designer/developer collaboration with built-in properties, principles, and constraints. IBM’s principles aim to create “carefully considered, uniquely unified, expertly executed, and positively progressive” designs. Airbnb’s language makes communication between designers and stakeholders much easier and standardizes practices across platforms and devices.

Developing a design language is arduous and time-consuming but well worth the effort. The earlier you start, the less work you’ll have, and the sooner your teams will start reaping the rewards. Airbnb’s Visual Language aims to achieve similar results but with the flexibility to scale. The company’s design language prioritizes speed and growth while preserving Airbnb’s strong brand identity. Part of IBM’s design philosophy is to create instantly recognizable designs. Users must be able to identify an IBM product by its design characteristics rather than the logo itself.

We want data visualization to present crucial points clearly and prominently for quick and easy reading, providing clear insights while still giving the user the option to get more information on demand at any time. Interaction should support analytical reasoning and user comprehension by revealing context, insights, associations and causality. At the time, it was only a content outline and three draft principles, but received overwhelming positive feedback. The THINK Reality guild members became the main group of contributors to the design guidelines. Getting contributions and feedback from Aldis Sipolins, the expert in the field, was extremely valuable, and gave me the confidence that even if we make mistakes, this project is still in good hands. Application of the IBM color palette brings an unified and recognizable consistency to IBM’s vast array of digital products and interfaces.

ibm design language

The Neutral Gray family is dominant in our UI, making use of subtle shifts in value to help organize content into distinct zones. The Core Blue family has been designated as the primary action color across all products and experiences, ensuring our color aesthetic is a part of every interaction. We’re pleased to announce the new IBM Design Language V2 color palette. The updates from V1 are quite subtle at first glance but incorporate significant refinements when considering contrast ratios and accessibility for digital screens and interfaces. For an in-depth article outlining the methodology and process please visit Because, colors are beautiful. A design language is a set of rules and principles that guide an organization’s visual identity, ensuring designs have a sense of continuity.

This helps us distinguish every element and every experience Designed by IBM. Foundational to their system, the 2x Grid provides structure and guidance for all of their creative decision-making. The core concept of the 2x Grid is to divide or multiply by two, forming a visual rhythm and foundation on which to work.

The weekend will feature a hybrid of in-person experiences, self-guided explorations and digital content. Peek inside everything from single rooms, studios, factories and public spaces to entire buildings, blocks, bike corridors and parks.

At Columbia - the epicenter of the demonstrations - the school's senate passed a resolution late Friday to investigate the university leadership’s handling of the protests. Daughtry reiterated the NYPD is ready to intervene and address issues on Columbia’s campus as soon as the university’s president gives them the go-ahead. Launched in 2019, Metropolitan is a membership circle that brings together like-minded professionals for city adventures and community building. If you have a dog-eared copy of The Power Broker, hold strong opinions about Open Streets, or think a sewer tour makes a great date, OHNY Metropolitan is for you. From wind farms to energy storage, explore renewable infrastructure investments along our city’s working waterfront that address climate change. About 175 OHNY Weekend experiences are “open access,” meaning no ticket is required. “Nothing reflects the dynamism and diversity of New York quite like OHNY Weekend. And nothing rivals the experience of exploring and discovering the city alongside thousands of New Yorkers and visitors from around the world,” Pamela Puchalski, executive director of Open House New York, said.

This weekend, October 16th & 17th, Open House New York returns with a lineup of 200 things to do across all five boroughs. First launched in 2001, the annual OHNY weekend gives New Yorkers a chance to access off-limits sights and delve deeper into iconic landmarks with a series of tours, talks, and open hours. This year, for its 20th anniversary, OHNY is back with a mix of in-person and virtual events, plus new COVID-19 protocols (bring your vaccination card, ID, and mask).

OHNY Weekend FAQs

Since its founding in the wake of 9/11, when much of the city was closed off due to increased security, the Weekend has provided access to thousands of places with architectural and cultural significance. It also provides an inside look at the city’s infrastructure and systems, both natural and constructed, to spotlight how nearly 9 million people live, work, and move across the five boroughs and beyond. OHNY’s recently expanded mission incorporates an investigation of racial, ethnic, community, civic, economic, and environmental issues that define quality of place and quality of life in New York. By offering an insider’s look at the forces that shape the city, OHNY Weekend promotes a deeper understanding of how the city functions and whom it serves, and demonstrates the power of place to improve the lives of all New Yorkers.

The theory of change guiding our work is that an informed public fosters greater civic participation, which in turn catalyzes an open city. On October 20-22, 2023, the 21st annual OHNY Weekend welcomed over 25,000 visitors into 330+ places across the five boroughs, spanning 128 neighborhoods, and nearly 1,400 zip codes. The lottery system for ticketed locations filled over 7,000 slots across the three-day festival.

For nearly two decades, Partners have welcomed hundreds of thousands of visitors during the Weekend. We strongly recommend that visitors also sign waivers for any experience requiring safety precautions such as a helmet, hardhat, life jacket, etc.. OHNY staff will review your organization’s waiver form, and, if necessary provide an additional form to ensure the safety of visitors and Partners. If you’re really interested in recycling, you should head across the borough to Bushwick to visit Sure We Can, a nonprofit communal space run by and for the city’s canners.

Tours

Lockport, NY—Congresswoman Claudia Tenney (NY-24) today hosted a roundtable discussion in Albion, New York, to provide a forum for local law enforcement leaders and elected officials to discuss the challenges facing the community. Interested in recording a tour but don’t have access to video specialists or professional equipment? We welcome professionally recorded tours by video specialists as well as low-cost productions made with little or no prior recording experience. A gimbal or stabilizer for your smartphone can make a dramatic improvement in video quality, and a variety of models are available for less than $100. Using a headset with a microphone – even the headphones that came with your phone – will provide better audio quality than using your phone alone. For Open Access locations, the public is permitted to visit on a drop-in basis during set hours on one or multiple days of OHNY Weekend.

OHNY Weekend volunteers are trained to welcome visitors and assist with check-in and site waivers, wayfinding, and guest counts. They can also distribute printed materials, congregate visitors in advance of a tour in designated areas and help manage lines. Q. What are the COVID-19 guidelines for in-person experiences? OHNY is committed to the health and safety of our Partners, Volunteers, and Weekend participants. We will require that all Partners follow state and city COVID prevention guidelines that are in place at the time of the Weekend. Partners should inform us of any additional precautions, e.g., proof of vaccination, negative test, or mask requirements, required by the organization or location so that our Volunteers and the public can be made aware of them and plan accordingly.

More than one million cans and bottles are redeemed each month at this facility, each rescued by hand from the city’s trash cans, but Sure We Can also provides support services to their community of 1,000+ canners. Tours will be offered on the hour on Saturday, 12pm–5pm on a first-come basis (more info). Then watch our virtual tour of Sure We Can with executive director Ryan Castalia from 2020.

The story behind the current American flag design

This might indicate that the creation of the flag was a group effort of sorts, one that may or may not have included Ross. Most historians credit Francis Hopkinson, a New Jersey delegate to the Continental Congress, with designing the first flag. This is largely due to a payment that he sought from the Board of Admiralty for his design of the “flag of the United States of America” in 1780.

The Minnesotan behind the design, Andrew Prekker, spoke with WCCO on Wednesday about the achievement. Dates in parentheses denote when the current flag was adopted by the state's legislature. Britain’s defeat at the 1781 Battle of Yorktown marked the conclusion of the American Revolution and the beginning of new challenges for a new nation. Not even three decades after the signing of the Treaty of Paris, which formalized Britain’s recognition of the United States of America, the two countries were again in conflict. Resentment for Britain’s interference with American international trade and impressment of American sailors combined with American expansionist visions led Congress to declare war on Great Britain on June 18, 1812.

Famous Americans

The Continental Colors were believed to have first been raised on Jan. 1, 1776 in Massachusetts at the behest of George Washington. The original American flag soon began to fly at forts and on naval vessels. "Minnesotans deserve the right to vote for what represents them. If that flag is this one or if that flag is the new one, it's a Minnesotan's right to vote," said Rep. Bjorn Olson, R-Fairmont. He compared the backlash in Minnesota to the fierce debate in Canada in the 60s when it adopted its now-iconic maple leaf flag.

Executive branch flags

Since the resolution did not specify the arrangements of the stars, flags exist with a variety of “constellations.” The “Betsy Ross” flag arranges the stars in a circular pattern. The current flag of the United States is the twenty-seventh version of the national flag. When the Thirteen Colonies were seceding from the British, there became a necessity for a flag to symbolize the patriot cause and rally individuals for the Revolution. U.S. flags are displayed continuously at certain locations by presidential proclamation, acts of Congress, and custom. Every U.S. astronaut since the crew of Gemini 4 has worn the flag on the left shoulder of his or her space suit, except for the crew of Apollo 1, whose flags were worn on the right shoulder.

Civil War and the flag

Greg Breeding, an art director for USPS, designed the stamp with an image provided by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the European Space Agency, the Canadian Space Agency and the Space Telescope Science Institute. In 1960, Heft’s 50-star American flag was officially displayed for the first time at Fort Henry in Baltimore, Maryland. This ushered in a new era in which the United States would begin to display the 50 embroidered star, stitched stripes American flag rather than the earlier flag variant with fewer stars. By giving away snippings, the Armisteads could share the Star-Spangled Banner with others who loved the flag. The citizens who received these mementos treated them with reverence and pride. Some framed and displayed these pieces of history in their homes; others donated them to museums.

Some private use is year-round, but becomes widespread on civic holidays like Memorial Day, Veterans Day, Presidents' Day, Flag Day, and on Independence Day. On Memorial Day, it is common to place small flags by war memorials and next to the graves of U.S. war veterans. Also, on Memorial Day, it is common to fly the flag at half staff until noon to remember those who lost their lives fighting in U.S. wars. The "relative" coordinates in the following table were found by scaling the luminous reflectance relative to the flag's white.

However, the number of stars increased with accession of new members from 13 to 50. The last star was added in 1960, when Hawaii officially became a part of the US. Since its origins in 1777, the American flag has been revised over two dozen times. When it was originally designed, the American flag featured 13 stripes along with 13 stars. While the current American flag still features 13 stripes, it now has 50 stars.

Associated people

Though most are aware of an early American flag with a circle of stars in the canton, the history of its gradual design changes remains largely unexplored. Not only was the first design likely inspired by the British East India Company, but the stars and stripes have never meant what you may think. U.S. Flags The Postal Service continues its tradition of celebrating the U.S. flag with these stamps, available in booklets of 20 and in coils of 100, 3,000 and 10,000. Four stamps feature the flag majestically waving at different times of the day. While the shapes and colors of the clouds change, the sun is always shining on Old Glory. Shown from a low-angle perspective, the flags draw attention upward, toward the magic of the sky.

What’s even more astonishing, however, is the fact that Heft didn’t score a perfect grade for his school project. It’s believed that Heft discussed the grade with his teacher, and the two joked that if Congress selected Heft’s design, his grade would be changed to an A. To the surprise of both parties, Congress did, in fact, choose Heft’s design. Heft’s teacher fulfilled her promise by changing his grade from a B- to an A. In the late 1800s, souvenirs, or relics, of important events and people in American history became highly prized and collectible objects. The Star-Spangled Banner, historic and celebrated, was subjected to this practice.

John Paul Jones would go on to be referred to as the “Father of the American Navy” for his bravery, skill, and dedication. "Bob" Heft (January 19, – December 12, 2009) was the designer of the current United States 50-star flag. He has also designed a 51-star flag that would be used if a new state joins the United States.[1] He was born in Saginaw, Michigan in January 1942.

But with the defeat of Emperor Napoleon’s armies in April 1814, Britain turned its full attention to the war against an ill-prepared United States. The Great Seal of the United States is a national symbol used in official documents such as treaties and commissions. The final design was approved in 1782 and includes a bald eagle, an olive branch, arrows, a flag-like shield, the motto E Pluribus Unum (which translates to "out of many, one") and a constellation of stars. Once instrumental in the early economic development of the United States, horses are now valued athletes and loyal companions, and are important in law enforcement, forestry, entertainment, equine therapy and cattle ranching.
